School Competition
Earlier this year, Riverside Junior School in Hebden Bridge took part in a competition which was organized by Brentwood Marketing. The children from Year 5 were asked to put together a design for a t-shirt which had an environmental theme, and on 7th September, the winning entrants were presented with an organic cotton t-shirt with their own design printed on it.
The t-shirts for the winners were donated by a company based in London called Saf which supplies organic cotton garments to Brentwood Marketing as well as many other companies both here and abroad. All of Saf’s garments are sourced in accordance with fair trade principals from a project in Northern India. The farmers are paid a premium for their cotton and a number of social projects are taking place within the community to ensure that the benefits of the additional income are felt by all members of the community.
The competition was judged by staff at Suma, an independent wholesaler and distributor of vegetarian, fairly traded, organic and natural foods, who are based in Elland. They also donated a selection of healthy option sweets to the winners.
The winners were Rachel Ferguson whose design won her 3rd place in the competition, Leanne Robertshaw whose entry won her scond place and Danielle McKeenan’s design was voted the favourite in 1st place for her “Look after our wildlife” drawing.
